Atletico Madrid is steadily closing in on Madrid following a dramatic 2-1 victory at Sevilla’s headquarters.
In the temporary standings of the 2024-2025 Spanish League La Liga, Atletico Madrid is continuing to close in on Real Madrid following a dramatic 2-1 victory over hosts Sevilla on Sunday (6/4) evening WIB.
According to the La Liga site, Lucien Agoume’s goal in the seventh minute gave Sevilla the advantage in the match. Atletico responded with a penalty goal by Julian Alvarez in the 25th minute and secured the lead with a strike by Pablo Barios in the final minutes (90+3′).
Atletico Madrid’s victory narrowed the points disparity between them and Real Madrid, who are currently in second place in the temporary standings of La Liga.
Real Madrid has 63 points with the same number of matches, while Atletico has accumulated 60 points from 30 matches to maintain its third-place position.
Barcelona is the provisional leader of La Liga, with a mere four points separating it from Real Madrid after 30 matches.
Sevilla was able to establish an early lead against Atletico after only seven minutes of play. Jan Oblak was unable to stop Lucien Agoume’s powerful shot from outside the penalty area, which gave his team a 1-0 lead.
Atletico pursued an equalizer while trailing. Nahuel Molina was presented with an opportunity in the 17th minute; however, his shot was unsuccessful.
In the 22nd minute, Atletico was granted a penalty. After Logic Bade dragged down Conor Gallagher, the referee directed attention to the location.
Julian Alvarez, who assumed the role of executor, executed his obligations effectively. The shot was directed into the right corner of Sevilla’s goal by the Argentine striker. The score was 1-1 in the 24th minute and remained that way until the conclusion of the first half.
Atletico nearly reversed the lead following the break. Orjan Nyland, the goalkeeper for Sevilla, blocked Giuliano Simeone’s strike from the right side, which did not result in a goal.
Bade’s strike from a corner kick presented Sevilla with an opportunity; however, it was not scored due to its altitude, which was just above Oblak’s goal.
Pablo Barrios’ action in the final minute or the 90+3 minute ultimately resulted in Atletico’s victory, as he deposited the ball in the right corner of Sevilla’s goal. Atletico secured a 2-1 victory.
